Here are some tips to prepare your family for a winter storm.

1. Charge all your cell phones ahead of time.
Charge all of your cell phones so that you have power on them, if the power goes out. Sometimes a cell phone is the only contact you have with the outside world during a storm. And, in the event you need help in a hurry, you won’t want to be without phone service!

2. Keep blankets on hand
It may sound simple, but having blankets out and easy to reach, can help if the heat happens to go out.

3. Keep several flashlights, batteries, candles on hand.

Keep flashlights on hand, if the lights go out.  Also, candles should really only be used as a backup, in the event that your batteries go dead in the flashlight.

4. Stock up on bottled water.
You will need a gallon of water per person per day. You can have water from the tap available even if your power goes out, but it is still a great idea to have bottled water on hand just in case. Also, you don't want your pipes to freeze so one tip is to let your faucets drip ever so slightly, this will help to prevent the pipes from freezing.

5. Have things to keep your entire family entertained while you wait out the storm.
Some ideas for activities include:

Card games
Board games
laptops and portable DVD players that can be charged up ahead of time
books
puzzles
craft projects

Follow these tips, and help your family be prepared for the storm.
